If you are planning a fishing trip to the Snowy Mountains this spring or summer, one tagged fish could pay for it. The Snowy Trout Challenge runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027. About 400 tagged rainbow trout go into three waters, and each tagged fish you register puts you in a $1,000 cash draw every month.
You do not need a boat, a guide or a competition ticket. Catch a tagged trout by any legal method, log it online, and you are in. This guide covers the 2026-2027 dates, waters, entry steps, NSW rules and where to stay near Lake Jindabyne.
An Overview of Snowy Trout Challenge
The Snowy Trout Challenge is a season-long tagged trout promotion in the NSW Snowy Mountains. It is not a weekend competition. You catch a rainbow trout carrying a Challenge tag, register the catch, and go into the cash prize draws.
Snowy Trout Challenge Inc runs the event. It is an initiative of NSW DPI Fisheries, the Lake Eucumbene Chamber of Commerce and the Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce. Current details sit on the official Snowy Trout Challenge page.

The first season ran in 2020-2021, which makes 2026-2027 the seventh. More than 2,500 trout have been tagged and released over the past five years. The fish are raised at Gaden Trout Hatchery near Jindabyne.

Where are the tagged trout released
The 2026-2027 tagged trout go into three waters, which are Lake Jindabyne, Lake Eucumbene and Talbingo Reservoir. Each one suits a different kind of trip.
Lake Jindabyne
Lake Jindabyne is the easiest Challenge water to fish from town. Most accommodation in central Jindabyne is a short walk from the foreshore, and the lake is open to fishing every day of the year. Bank anglers do well at the town foreshore and Hatchery Bay at first and last light.
For spots, methods and seasonal tips, see our Jindabyne fishing guide.
Lake Eucumbene
Lake Eucumbene is the largest storage lake in the Snowy Mountains, and it takes a 60-minute drive from Jindabyne. The water is bigger and the fish are more spread out, so a boat helps you cover ground.
Bank fishing still works here, but allow a full day and settle on one stretch of shore.
Talbingo Reservoir
Talbingo Reservoir is new to the list. Earlier seasons used Lake Crackenback as the third water. Talbingo sits on the western side of the mountains, and takes a 142-minute drive from Jindabyne, so plan it as its own trip. Any trout cod you hook here must go straight back, which is 100% catch and release.

How to enter the Snowy Trout Challenge
To enter the Snowy Trout Challenge, catch a tagged rainbow trout and lodge the catch online before the season closes. The official terms set out five steps, and it pays to do them at the water’s edge.
- Catch a tagged trout. Use legal recreational fishing gear and follow NSW fishing rules. Fish caught any other way do not qualify.
- Record the catch. Note the location, date and time, then measure the length of the fish.
- Take two photos. One shows the tag still in place with the number in focus. The other shows you holding the fish.
- Remove and keep the tag. Cut it off close to the skin with a sharp knife or scissors, without pulling out the barb. You can keep the fish or release it.
- Complete the entry survey. Fill in the 2026-2027 entry form by 30 April 2027.
One entry keeps you in every remaining draw of the season. Be careful with tag numbers. If two different anglers lodge the same number, both entries are disqualified from all later draws.
Prizes and draw dates
The Snowy Trout Challenge awards one $1,000 cash prize in each monthly draw.
- Draw dates: The last Saturday of each month. That means 31 October, 28 November and 26 December 2026, then 30 January, 27 February, 27 March and 24 April 2027, plus a final draw on Saturday 1 May 2027.
- Eligible tags: Any Challenge tag from 2020 to 2027, lodged this season.
- One win each: Each angler can win once, and previous winners are excluded.
- Second chance: Subscribe to the organisers’ email list to enter a $500 draw. No fish required.
- Results: Winners are announced on the Challenge’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
About 400 tagged fish are spread across three large waters, so treat the prize as a bonus on a good fishing trip.

Rules to know before you fish
Standard NSW freshwater rules apply to every fish you catch during the Challenge.
- Licence: Anyone aged 18 or over needs a NSW recreational fishing licence. Service NSW lists the fees as $7 for 3 days, $14 for 1 month, $35 for 1 year and $85 for 3 years.
- Bag and size limits: In trout dams, the combined bag limit is 5 trout or salmon, with a minimum length of 25 cm, according to NSW DPIRD’s freshwater limits.
- Seasons: Trout dams, including Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene, are open all year. Rivers and streams reopened on Saturday 3 October 2026.
- Who can enter: Australian residents. Anglers under 18 need a parent or guardian’s permission.
Snowy Trout Challenge Inc runs this event independently, and Alpine Country Holidays is not affiliated with it. Check the official terms before you travel, because details can change.
Where to stay for the Snowy Trout Challenge
Lake Jindabyne is the closest Challenge water to town, so a base near the shore gives you the first and last hour of light without a drive. These four Alpine Country Holidays properties suit anglers.
- Mogul Lakeside, East Jindabyne: Boat access to the lake, a drying area and off-street parking for two cars. Sleeps 6.
- The Wolery, Lakeside Jindabyne: On the lake shore, with a heated drying room. Sleeps 4. Parking is on the street, so it is not ideal with a boat trailer.
- LakeShore, Jindabyne: Across the road from the lake and a 3-minute walk to the town centre. Sleeps 6.
- Cobb & Co 2: A ground-floor one-bedroom apartment opposite the lake. Sleeps 3.
None of these four accept pets. If your dog is coming along, start with our dog friendly properties.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Snowy Trout Challenge free to enter?
The official 2026-2027 terms and conditions list no entry fee for the Snowy Trout Challenge. You enter by catching a tagged rainbow trout and completing the online entry survey. You still need a NSW recreational fishing licence if you are 18 or over, which costs from $7 for 3 days.
What colour are the Snowy Trout Challenge tags in 2026-2027?
The 2026-2027 Snowy Trout Challenge tags are pink and labelled 2026-2027. Each tag carries a unique number. Tags from earlier seasons still count, because the terms accept any Challenge tag from 2020 to 2027 in this season’s monthly draws. Photograph the tag in place before you remove it.
Do I have to keep a tagged trout to claim it?
No. You can keep or release a tagged trout, and your entry is valid in both cases. If you release the fish, cut the tag off close to the skin without removing the barb, and hold on to the tag. Take your two photos and measure the fish first, because you cannot redo them once it swims away.
Can children enter the Snowy Trout Challenge?
Yes. Anglers under 18 can enter the Snowy Trout Challenge with the permission of a parent or guardian. Children do not need a NSW recreational fishing licence, because Service NSW requires one only from age 18. The same entry steps, photos and tag rules apply to every age.
Is the Snowy Trout Challenge the same as the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival?
No. The Snowy Trout Challenge is a seven-month tagged fish promotion that runs from October to April. The Snowy Mountains Trout Festival is a separate, shorter fishing competition based around Adaminaby and Lake Eucumbene. You can fish both in one trip, but each has its own organiser, entry process and prizes.
Can I enter if I catch a tagged trout from a previous season?
Yes. Every Snowy Trout Challenge tag from 2020 to 2027 is eligible for the 2026-27 monthly cash draws, according to the official terms. Lodge the old tag through this season’s entry survey between 1 October 2026 and 30 April 2027. Record the tag colour along with the number, because the survey asks for both.
